'Seventy Years' from Jeremiah to Daniel: Semantics, Interpretation and Apocalypticism, Beit Mikra vol.59 (2014), no. 2
Gabriel Barzilai
In one of the visions of Daniel (Chapter IX), the author reinterprets the prophecies of Jeremiah that mention the phrase "seventy years". The new interpretation extends the time until the final redemption from "seventy years" to "seventy weeks of years", i.e., 490 years.
The reinterpretation is the conclusion of the interpretive process that traces back to the Second Temple period. That outlook linked the expression "seventy years" to concepts of destruction, exile and divine punishment.
In this paper, it is proposed that the "seventy years" phrase in the prophecies of Jeremiah relates not to destruction and exile, but rather to the semantics employed by royal dynasties. Using this approach, the evolving interpretation of the phrase are examined, and explained as reflecting the deep cultural changes experienced by the exiles of Judah during the Babylonian Exile and the Return to Zion.
