On J. Joosten, The Verbal System of Biblical Hebrew

Prof. Moshe Bar-Asher:
Prof. Joosten’s book, The Verbal System of Biblical Hebrew, is an excellent contribution to the study of Biblical Hebrew grammar. The mastery of the verbal system and its rules constitutes an essential basis for the proper grasp of biblical Hebrew morphology, syntax, as well as semantics. Moreover, a clear description of the biblical Hebrew verbal system leads to a more precise under-standing of verbal systems from later periods of the language, which, although different from the biblical system, are based upon it to a considerable extent.
I can think of no other biblical scholar of Prof. Joosten’s stature who is as capable of investigating the subject. In this book Joosten presents students and scholars of Biblical Hebrew with a reference work whose absence has long been felt. I have no doubt that this is one of the most important books on Biblical Hebrew that has appeared in recent years.
Moshe Bar-Asher is Emeritus Professor of Hebrew at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem and president of the Academy of the Hebrew Language.

Alexander Rofé, Introduction to the Literature of the Hebrew Bible

Alexander Rofé, Introduction to the Literature of the Hebrew Bible, Jerusalem Biblical Studies vol. 9, Simor, Jerusalem 2009, 680 pp.  hardcover

This introduction to the Literature of the Hebrew Bible by a leading Israeli scholar combines the insight of modern scholarship with an appreciation of the concerns of traditional biblical study.
In five major sections the author discusses the historical books, the Pentateuch, the prophets, the psalms, and the wisdom writings. Technical jargon is largely avoided: one of the main strengths of the volume is its use of worked examples showing how the author has reached his conclusions about the meaning and the literary-historical development of the texts that he discusses. The extensive indexes provide full referencing for texts and authors mentioned in the volume.
This introduction will prove an excellent textbook for students of the Hebrew Bible who are moving on from the beginning stages of their study. Since the volume also reflects the originality of the author’s approach to a number of issues and texts, it will also serve as a valuable resource for the scholarly community more widely.

On Alexander Rofé’s Introduction to the Literature of the Hebrew Bible

Edward L. Greenstein, Professor of Bible and Straus Distinguished Scholar, Bar Ilan University

Professor Alexander Rofé’s Introduction to the Literature of the Hebrew Bible is a major contribution to Biblical studies. At once scholarly and readable, state-of-the-art and original, this Introduction takes a considered look at both the forest and the trees: analyzing the major types of literature in the Hebrew Bible and proposing, in ways that are always plausible and often quite convincing, how the most fundamental literary units – from folk tales to proverbs, from anecdotes to oracles – were combined and edited into the extensive compositions that we find. Using literary, linguistic, and ideational criteria, Rofé reconstructs the stages of composition and dates them as accurately as possible. Evidence from extra-Biblical sources as well as the history of the Bible’s transmission is taken into account, as are models from the history and poetics of literature in general. This is a book for students, for scholars, and for any serious reader who has wondered how the Hebrew Bible has come to be. Rofé’s magnum opus is a force to reckon with, essential for everyone in the field.
