פרופ' שרה יפת ז"ל (1934–2024)
החוג למקרא מרכין ראש עם פטירתה של מורתנו ועמיתתנו, פרופ' שרה יפת, כשהיא מוקפת בבני משפחתה.
פרופ' יפת הייתה מעמודי התווך של חקר המקרא ופרשנותו. מאז עבודת הדוקטור שלה (שראתה אור בספר 'אמונות ודעות בספר דברי הימים', תשל"ז) פרסמה סדרת מחקרים פורצי דרך אשר שינו מן היסוד את תפיסת המחקר לגבי היבטיה השונים של ספרות שיבת ציון שנכתבה בראשית ימי הבית השני. שיאם בפירושים מקיפים לספר עזרא ונחמיה (בסדרת 'מקרא לישראל', תשע"ט) ולספר דברי הימים (התפרסם במקור באנגלית בסדרת Old Testament Library, 1993; נוסח מעודכן ומעובד בעברית בסדרת 'מקרא לישראל' נמצא כעת בדפוס). בד בבד פיתחה תחום מחקר נוסף: פרשנות הפשט של המקרא בימי הביניים, ובמיוחד יצירתו הפרשנית הנועזת של רבי שמואל בן מאיר (רשב"ם), נכדו של רש"י. גם בתחום זה פרסמה מחקרים רבים, לרבות מהדורות מדעיות לפירושי רשב"ם לספרי קהלת, איוב ושיר השירים.
פרופ' יפת שירתה את האוניברסיטה העברית ואת הקהילה המדעית במגוון דרכים ונשאה בעול של תפקידי ניהול אקדמי הכוללים בין השאר את ראשות החוג למקרא וראשות המכון למדעי היהדות. היא הייתה מנהלת בית הספרים הלאומי והאוניברסיטאי (כיום: הספרייה הלאומית) בין השנים 1997–2001, ונשיאת האיגוד העולמי למדעי היהדות בין השנים 2006–2009.
פרופ' יפת זכתה להכרה לאומית ובין-לאומית על הישגיה במחקר, ויצוינו במיוחד פרס ישראל בחקר המקרא לשנת תשס"ד, ומדליית ברקיט מטעם האקדמיה הבריטית לשנת 2023. היא העמידה תלמידות ותלמידים רבים, שחלקם מכהנים כיום בחוגים למקרא בארץ ובעולם.
הלוויה תהיה ביום שישי, י"ט באדר ב תשפ"ד (29.3.2024) בשעה 11:00, בבית הקברות של קריית ענבים. יושבים שבעה בבית שרה יפת, רח׳ אריה מקלף 9, רמת מוצא, ירושלים. השבעה ביום שישי מאחר הצהרים עד כניסת השבת, במוצ״ש, ובימים ראשון עד רביעי (כולל).
Professor Sara Japhet (1934–2024)
The Hebrew University Department of Bible is saddened to note the passing away of our teacher, mentor, and colleague Professor Sara Japhet, surrounded by her family. Professor Japhet was a giant in the critical study of the Hebrew Bible and the history of its interpretation. Since her doctoral dissertation on the theology and ideology of the book of Chronicles (published in Hebrew in 1977; English translation in 1989, with a reprint in 2004), she launched a series of groundbreaking studies exploring various aspects of the biblical literature composed during and about the Restoration period, culminating in her comprehensive commentaries on Chronicles (OTL, 1993; a revised and updated Hebrew version is under the press as part of the Mikra LeYisrael series) and Ezra-Nehemia (Mikra LeYisrael, 2019). At the same time, she also developed another research field: Jewish medieval interpretation of the Hebrew Bible, with special attention to the bold Peshat commentaries of Samuel son of Meir (Rashbam), Rashi’s grandson. She published many important studies in this realm, too, including critical editions of Rashbam’s commentaries on Ecclesiastes, Job, and Canticles.
Professor Japhet served the Hebrew University and the scholarly community in a variety of positions and carried the burden of academic leadership roles including the Chair of the Department of Bible and the Head of the Institute of Jewish Studies. She was the Director of the National Library of Israel (1997–2001) and the President of the World Union of Jewish Studies (2006–2009).
Professor Japhet was nationally and internationally acclaimed for her achievements; among other things, she was the recipient of the Israel Prize for Biblical Research (2004) and the Burkitt Medal of the British Academy (2023). She trained many students, some of whom currently hold positions in Bible departments around the country and the globe.
The funeral will take place on Friday, March 29, 2024 (11 AM) at the cemetery of Kiryat Anavim, near Jerusalem. Shiva will be held at Sara Japhet’s house, 9 Arie Maklef Street, Ramat Motza, Jerusalem, from Friday afternoon through Wednesday (excluding Shabbat).
